The trends in relation to parenting changes a lot. Some, who were at one time respected and marked the way of raising a whole generation, a few years later are considered obsolete or absolutely dangerous to the health of our children. These changes do not arise as the result of the anything, but they respond, among other factors, to:
- the transformations that we are living
- the demands of the style of life that is in every culture
- the place that we give as a society to the children
- the scientific discoveries related to the health of the newborn
One of the concerns within the upbringing of the baby is how to deal with colic, in front of which a lot of people wonder what are they really? what happens to all the babies? what are stomach problems? allergies? what happen because the mom is nervous?
Colic generally start at 2 weeks of age, have a peack at 6 weeks and end at 3 or 4 months. They are characterized by a cry of a sudden, accompanied by a face of pain. The crying is intense and comes in waves, and abruptly stops. Are usually worse in the evenings and occur in the 1° child as in the 5°.
The latest research about the cramps propose that they would not have any problems related to gas, food allergies, reflux, anxiety, maternal, immaturity of the nervous system or temperament of the babies, if not that would be a response to the need of stimuli they received in the womb, what's funny is not?
After so many years of myths and confusions about it every time there's more agreement on this theory. Due to the idea that humans evolved, our brains became larger and thanks to this intelligence, we managed to walk on 2 feet. So our hips were more narrow and it was necessary to adapt to this new condition in order to survive.
What happened was that they started to survive those babies that were born at 9 months gestation, and that they were therefore, able to pass through the birth canal. Then, we are born with the reflexes basic to be able to survive, such as sucking, crying, or keeping our heart beating, but like the rest of the mammals we are dependent during the first months of life.
From this, it is our mission as parents is to shelter, nurture and cherish our small taking into consideration that the best thing we can do during the 3 first months is to try to replicate the uterine environment outside of it. That is to say rocking, wrapping, and feeding them constantly, offering them also an environment with white noise that allow it to activate this reflex of calm associated with the sensations of uterine.
Although all this may seem to be common-sense has developed a technique that involves systematizing these actions in such a way that it is most effective activation of the mirror of calm. Applies in children, after having revised that are not hungry, sleepy, dirty diaper, or need to be taken continue crying without comfort.
This is called the 5 eses, by the acronyms in English:
- Swaddling (wrapping)
- Side, or Stomac position (position on your side or belly)
- Shuhing (which refers to making shhhhh or put a white noise)
- Swinging (rocking)
- Sucking (suck)
This group of actions is a strategy, that if you train us, help to calm colic and sleep better, therefore have more moments to enjoy with our children.
